James 1:21

"Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you." James 1:21 NIV

"... so clear away all the foul frank growth of malice, and make soil of humble modesty for the Word which roots itself inwardly with power to save your souls." James 1:20 Moffatt

The context of this advice is given in preceding stanzas:  "quick to listen, slow to anger" v19 and "mans anger does not bring about righteousness" v21.

The objective is clearly righteous living. and the method (so vividly exposed in the Moffatt translation) is that by working obediently to eliminate unrighteousness ... we properly prepare our spirits for deeply rooting the Word of truth -- which leads to life.

Otherwise we are wealthy in worldly gain (at whatever scale) and this withers and is blown away.  Only that which grows in the Kingdom of Heaven is permanent.

"I am the way the life and the truth" says Jesus.
