Jeremiah 29:11

The person I miss most is the one I could have been. - George Bernard Shaw

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

No one knows the mind of God.  And so Mr' Shaw's comment resonates with the sense of loss we feel over having failed to meet our own expectations.

And even then!  ... having failed our own hopes, we put pressure on ourselves to meet the expectations of others.  It's almost like: "I can't be what I want to be, why don't I try to be what you want me to be?"   A mother is driven to see her daughter become a beauty queen.  A father is compelled to assure his son follows in a Banker's footsteps.   Young athletes aspire to become professionals.  Singers want to be discovered.

Worldly measures are confounding and false.

"...It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God." 1 Cor. 3-5

Rather than permit my perceptions of failing in life to overcome me and disturb my peace, even depress me -- I'm wiser to reserve judging for the One who has promised a future and hope.

"...being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."  Phil. 1:6
